There may be either one or two brake fluid reservoirs, and there are many differences in both the type of reservoir and its location. The reservoir on Beetle models is generally in the front luggage compartment and is immediately visible.
Check the level of the fluid in the reservoir. The level should be within 3/4" of the cap threads.
If the fluid level is low, wipe around the cap with a clean dry cloth.
Remove the cap and add new, clean DOT3 brake fluid to the proper level. Do not overfill the reservoir. Take care not to spill any fluid onto the body or any painted surface because the fluid will damage the paint. If fluid is spilled, it should be wiped off immediately.
If the fluid level has dropped considerably since the last check, it is likely that there is a leak in the system. All the brake cylinders, brake lines and flexible hoses should be examined carefully. A slight drop in fluid level is normal, because the wear in the brake linings causes the pistons to move further out of the brake cylinders.
